Dear all

Next week the Conservative Party Conference takes place in Manchester. This will be the last party conference before the General election, which is likely to be held on the 6th May 2010. I've been quoting this date for a while, so it was entertaining to read of a leaked Labour party document mentioning this date and hearing a former Labour minister also say the same.

This means we have 31 weeks to run until the election day, or put another way 217 days in which to convince the people of Edinburgh West that the change they want is represented by myself as candidate for the Scottish Conservatives.

We have a positive message, we want to rebuild our shattered economy, we want to rebuild our broken society. Neither can be achieved quickly, but as history shows, it is the Conservative party that has to undo the mess left by the Labour governments who always run out of money and ideas.

Two weeks ago, we had the Lib Dems suggesting a less than half baked idea to tax large houses. An idea which appealed to a small tribal element, but would result in a huge complication in the tax system and a loss of revenue to Scotland.

This week, we have the grossly offensive statement by a government minister that the Conservatives would close sure start nurseries and replace them with lap dancing clubs…. Yes she really did say that! It makes you wonder what is coming next.

Having said that, the media were well out of order to question the Prime Minister on unsubstantiated rumours regarding his health. I applaud David Cameron for coming to the defence of the Prime Minister.

We have been subjected to a blizzard of ideas and rhetoric, all of which fails to address the real issues. For example, take the case of a single man living on benefits, currently £96 per week. If this individual goes to work for 15 hours a week, he will be £10 better off. Is it any wonder that every new job created under a Labour government in the past 12 years has gone to immigrants? It isn't worth the effort and cost for people on benefits to go to work. They are in a dependency trap created by the Labour Government.

Something has to change, we must make it worthwhile for people to go to work. The vast majority want to work, it's just that the Labour Government make it pointless to do so, and that is wrong.

Regards

Stewart Geddes
