Dear all,
As we campaign in Edinburgh West it is important to remember that our opponents are the Liberal Democrats. It is sometimes said that understanding what they stand for is like trying to nail jelly to the floor.
It is true that the retiring MP appears to be a charming individual who is, apparently, personally popular. The fact is that he is retiring and a new candidate has been appointed who the local press have immediately assumed will be the next MP.
Well... I beg to differ.
I think it is Important that when you are speaking to your friends and acquaintances that you highlight some facts and figures so that suitable judgements can be made.
There is a perception that the LD's are a middle of the road party, an easy option, as receptacle for the protest vote, safe and cuddly yet inoffensive.
Let me point out the reality. The LD's are a socialist party. Any time there is a division, they support the Labour party. They have been quite clear that they will not support a Conservative government that lacks an overall majority (so much for a pragmatic middle of the road approach).
The Lib Dems are very good at criticising incumbent administrations at National and local levels, yet when they are called to deliver they simply cannot do so (Trams, Edinburgh Roads, School closures, cutbacks to services for vulnerable people).
They are opportunists grasping at publicity stunts regardless of any need to back up their actions. The reality again is that they talk a good line but asked to deliver and they are at sea. Just look back to the so called mansion tax, something that if ever implemented would affect a lot of people in Edinburgh who live on modest incomes but have the good fortune (if that be the word) to have bought wisely many years ago. Again, the reality is that Vince Cable can say what he likes because he knows that he will never be called upon to implement any of his promises. That said it would have been wiser if he had consulted with his colleagues before announcing a new tax proposal.
All in all then, the Lib Dems can say what they like. Just remember to remind your friends that it is all pie in the sky because they can never form a government, In any case, would you like a National Government that was as efficient as Edinburgh Council??? No I thought not!
The Conservatives are the only party who can offer change. We can be part of the government campaigning for Edinburgh West from the Inside and not shouting from the sidelines.
So, vote conservative at the next election and let's make a difference.
Regards
Stewart Geddes
Conservative Westminster Candidate for Edinburgh West
